Anyone else think that hybrid cars manufacturers have it backwards?

I am pretty sure the gas that I use around town doesn’t bother me as much as the gas I use on long trips. Wouldn’t it make more sense to use gas in town on short trips and electricity on the long trips? Especially now that the technology has progressed to allow it?
